Cuomo Concedes New York Mayoral Primary To Mamdani

Topline

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded the Democratic New York Mayoral Primary to Zohran Mamdani after the progressive 33-year-old state assemblyman secured a seven-point lead in the first round of ranked choice voting, in a result that has defied polling.

Key Facts

With 92% of the votes counted, Mamdani led the race, having received 43.5% of the votes, while Cuomo’s tally stood at 36.4%, according to the Associated Press.

The city’s Comptroller Brad Lander, who was cross-endorsed by Mamdani, was in third place with 11% of the vote.

In his concession speech, the former New York governor said “tonight was not our night,” and added Mamdani “deserved it…He won.”

Crucial Quote

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who endorsed Mamdani, wrote on X, “Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani and his thousands of grassroots supporters for their extraordinary campaign. You took on the political, economic and media Establishment- and you beat them. Now it’s on to victory in the general election.”

This is a developing story.
